Cracking the Story of Eggs: A Farm's Golden Gem

Welcome back to our monthly farm blog, where we dive into the heart of agriculture and wholesome plant-based and farm to table nutrition. This March we are celebrating one of nature's most versatile and nutritious treasures: eggs!

A Sunny Side-Up History

Eggs have been a staple in human diets for millennia, dating back to ancient civilizations like the Egyptians and Romans. These oval wonders have evolved from being simple sustenance to culinary delights and cultural symbols worldwide. Who would have thought that such a small package could hold so much history?

The Great Debate: Chicken or Egg?

Ah, the age-old question: Which came first, the chicken or the egg? Well, on our farm, we like to joke that the chicken came first, but only because she wanted to lay claim to the best nesting spot before the egg could hatch any plans!

Egg-cellent Uses

From breakfast classics like scrambled eggs and omelets to decadent desserts like custards and meringues, eggs wear many hats in the kitchen. They're not just for eating, though! Eggs are also used in various household products, from beauty masks to craft projects. It's egg-ceptional how many roles they play!

Crack the Code: Organic, Free-Range, Grass-Fed, Oh My!

Ever wonder what all those labels on egg cartons mean? Let's break it down:

  • Organic: Eggs labeled organic come from hens raised on organic feed without synthetic pesticides or antibiotics. They're free to roam outdoors and are subject to strict regulations.

  • Free-Range: These eggs come from hens with access to the outdoors, allowing them to exhibit natural behaviors like scratching and dust bathing.

  • Grass-Fed: While this label is more commonly associated with meat, it can also apply to eggs from hens that have access to pasture and feed supplemented with grass.

Lucky for you, by getting eggs from our farm you can feel safe knowing your eggs check off all these boxes and feel good too!
